Magnetic materials
possess magnetism due to spin magnetic moment and orbital magnetic moment of
electrons. Spin magnetic moment contributes more to magnetism. There are three
types of magnetic materials- diamagnetic, paramagnetic and ferromagnetic. Diamagnetic
materials opposes applied magnetic field and possess negative magnetic
susceptibility. Paramagnetic materials possess low values of positive magnetic
susceptibility and ferromagnetic materials possess large values of positive
magnetic susceptibility. Ferromagnetic materials can be in ferro, ferri or in
antiferro form. In such materials there exist magnetic lattice and sublattices.
It’s a fact that intra-sublattice interactions are weaker than the
inter-sublattice interactions. Antiferromagnetic materials with body centered
cubic crystal symmetry can have canted spin arrangement. Here the magnetization
in four magnetic sub lattices is not parallel to the molecular field.
