Charge coupled devices
Random access memory (RAM), magnetic core memory, read only (ROM), programmable read only memory (PROM), disk memory, digital magnetic tape drives, cassette tapes, magnetic bubble memory etc. are the some common terms used in memory technology. Charged coupled devices or CCDs are very much faster than bubble memories. They are more expensive. CCD memory elements and dynamic integrated-circuit random access memory elements are similar in a sense that in both data are stored in the form of small capacitive charges. Due to volatile nature of CCD memory, risk of losing contents on power failure exists. Hence uninterrupted power supply is a must for CCD system. This is an area where newer technologies are emerging in no time. Latest in this category is electron beam addressable memories (EBAM).
