closed and open gas turbines

The two types of constant volume gas turbine are open cycle constant pressure gas turbine and closed cycle constant pressure gas turbine. Normally internal combustion engine design is preferred for gas turbines. In open gas turbine engines, air is used as working fluid which serves as the required oxidant material for the hydrocarbon fuels. The other components of the open gas turbine are compressor, combustion chamber and turbine. Here compressor and turbine are mounted on a common shaft. The combustion chamber accepts pressurized air to enter. In closed gas turbine engines, a compressor, combustion chamber, turbine and cooler are used. Closed gas turbines consume lesser space compared to open gas turbines. Closed gas turbine yields very high thermal efficiency, improved heat transmission and without any filter. Closed gas turbines are not advisable to use in flying vehicle due to its high specific weight. Cheaper fuels are permitted in closed gas turbines whereas open gas turbines require expensive fuel for its functioning.
