Boring methods

Commonly used boring methods are Auger boring, Auger and shell boring, wash boring, percussion boring and rotary boring. In Auger boring, Augers are used. This method is extensively used in soft cohesive soils above water table. Both mechanical and manual operation is possible here. For greater depths and for gravelly soils, mechanically operated augers are preferred. The two types of augers commonly used are spiral auger and post-hole auger. In Auger and shell type of boring, cylindrical augers and shells with cutting edge or teeth at lower end are used. Wash boring is the simplest boring technique which can be employed for any kind of soils. This method is not advisable for boulders and rock. In percussion boring, soil and rock formations are subjected to repeated hammering or blowing by a bit suspended by a cable. The impact sometimes yields negative affects. Rotary boring is a fast boring method which can be employed for rocks and soils.
