Silicon carbide

Some important properties of silicon carbide are superlative creep resistance, advanced oxidation resistance, high hardness, superior mechanical strength, low weight, elevated Young’s modulus and good corrosion resistance. Raw materials of silicon carbide are inexpensive and can be made in complex shapes. The main applications of silicon carbide are high temperature heat engines, nuclear fusion reactors, aeronautical and space industries and chemical processing industry. Ceramic high temperature heat engines use silicon carbide material for the construction of wrist pins, push rod tips, lifters roller followers, rocker arm pads, pre-combustion caps, turbo-charger rotor and piston liner. Automotive gas engines also use silicon carbide for the construction of noise cones, turbine wheel combustion chamber and various rotors. Chemical processing industry use silicon carbide owing to its properties such as high abrasion resistance, hardness and chemical inertness. Chemical processing industry use silicon carbide for the construction of nozzles, seals, valves, lens, plates etc. Silicon carbide is also used for the construction of various bearings, pump impellars, heat exchanger tubes, extrusion dies, mould billets, fixtures, furnace heating elements etc.
