History of Indian railways

In the year 1850, construction of a railway line between Bombay and Kalyan has started.   Bombay-Thane (34km) railway line opened in 1853. Howrah-Hoogly railway line opened in the year 1854. Metric gauge introduced in the year 1871 and opened for public in the year 1873 from Delhi to Faruknagar. Victoria terminus railway station in Bombay constructed in the year 1887. Kalka-Shimla narrow gauge line opened in the year 1903. Electrified line introduced in the year 1925. In 1936, air conditioned coaches were introduced for the first time. Railway protection force constituted in the year 1957. Rajadhani express between Delhi and Howrah was introduced in the year 1969. Metro rail introduced in Kolkata in the year 1984. Computerized passenger reservation system was introduced in the year 1985. Shatabdi train between Delhi-Jhansi was introduced in the year 1988. Konkan railway opened in the year 1998. Jan shatabdi trains was introduced in the year 2002.
