A device which is used to measure speed is known as tachometer. Mainly there are two categories in tachometers- mechanical and electric. In mechanical tachometers, revolution counter tachometer, centrifugal force tachometer and resonance tachometer are the important varieties. In electric tachometers, eddy current tachometer, electric generator tachometer, contact less type tachometer, frequency type tachometer, ignition type tachometer, stroboscopic tachometer etc. are the important varieties. Only mechanical parts and movements are used in mechanical tachometers. In electric tachometers, a transducer is used which converts rotational speed into an electrical signal which is then coupled to an indicator.
